Trailer Talk: The Birth of a Neon Strange Snowden

Suicide Squad
Hmm. With the first trailer focusing on the dark and dreary tones that mimicked Batman V Superman, and the second echoing Guardians of the Galaxy, this third look at the film seems to be attempting a mish-mash of the dull and the fun, with mixed results (and a Margot Robbie bra shot. Because...comic book nerds likey?). It doesn't really do anything other than dispel the rumours that that second trailer had all the funny moments.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
There's something interesting about the decision to rely a little more on the Harry Potter brand here, what with the Dumbledore name-check and the not-so mild tones of 'Hedwig's Theme' in the music. But the film does look rather charming, with Eddie Redmayne looking to be a great casting choice for Newt Scamander.  It'll be interesting to see how the marketing evolves as the film draws ever closer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Eh, bog-standard stuff. I imagine it'll be fun for some, but not so much for others (i.e. me).

A Monster Calls
A promising children's film with plenty of whimsy to go for it. Plus the visuals are looking superb, so A Monster Calls could very well be one of the better post-summer children's movies to come out in recent years.

Doctor Strange
Okay, you know the drill - brand new Marvel Studios trailer; teaser for a non-sequel which presents itself as somewhat dark but new, etc. etc.. The thing with Doctor Strange here is that it adheres to the same technique that Ant-Man began its marketing with, only here with a more Thor-esque approach. Still looks really good, and seeing the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen all in one film by the guys who've brought some superb things to the big screen does show promise, but so far it's very basic and only really shows that this film is something a little newer than previous efforts.

The Neon Demon
Man, this looks good. I may not be the biggest fan of Nicholas Winding Refn's work, but this model-based iteration of Black Swan does certainly look great. The visuals are astounding, the plot shrouded in secrecy, and Elle Fanning is looking like she's really into this new and interesting role she has to play. I don't care if this is an Amazon Prime production - I'm game.

The Birth of a Nation
12 Years a Slave where the slaves fight back? As a film that's been called a Best Picture potential since its first appearance on the festival circuit, how great it is to see what all the fuss is about. I'm sure as hell looking forward to seeing how this film actually plays out, as this trailer certainly cements my interest.

Equals
So...it's The Gift but with colour and a romantic lean to it? Pass.

The Magnificent Seven
What better way to try and revive the Western movie genre then by remaking the 1960 classic with the likes of Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington? And with the film being directed by Antoine Fuqua, it looks like we may have a good film on our hands...if they can balance out the ensemble cast well and do the original justice. But eh, I'd have probably seen it just for Chris Pratt anyway.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
BEGONE, TERRIBLE MOVIE!

The Girl On The Train
In 2014, Gone Girl became a huge hit thanks to the efforts of David Fincher, Ben Affleck and the later-Oscar nominated Rosamund Pike. So naturally, the copy-cats have come out to play, with The Girl on the Train being the first of these with a premise and tone that feels eerily similar...but still pretty darn good. Emily Blunt rarely goes wrong, and it looks to be another strong mystery caper.

Jason Bourne
Quick note Universal: DON'T DO 6 TEASERS FOR A TRAILER YOU NUMPTIES!

Ahem. Anywho, Jason Bourne looks bad-ass. Not much else to say really...except that it's seemingly a return to form for the franchise.

The Founder
The Social Network but based around fast-food giant McDonald's is an idea I wouldn't exactly be appealled by on paper, but seeing this trailer, this cast, and just the very content that's present here makes me very interested on what we've got here. My only worry is the August release date...bit early if they want award buzz, isn't it?

Independence Day: Resurgence
Meh.

X-Men: Apocalypse
So we're on Trailer 4 or something now, and I'm still not won over by this film's marketing. Even with the Quicksilver/Magneto relationship made canon, they must have been so worried about it that they'd spoil what looks to have been a genuine twist in the form of Hugh Jackman in his eighth appearance as the clawed mutant. At least the film's nearly out now...

Snowden
Well this looks great. The whole NSA debacle has been a talking point ever since the whole thing was made public a few short years ago, and this Oliver Stone production is looking like a strong adaptation of Edward Snowden's discovery and reveal of the files that spy on every US citizen. Plus Gordon-Levitt better get some recognition here because he's doing a great job.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie
ARGH! AWAY WITH YOU!

Southside with You
So a love story...except the gimmick is that it's a true story about how the current President and his wife got together? Okay, that's a good enough draw to warrant interest. It's an interesting take on a very basic and generic genre of movies, so maybe Southside With You will be a refreshing feature.

Me Before You
Wow. Just wow. This is a major release? You would hardly tell thanks to just how shoddily put together this trailer is. Just...eurgh.
