With a tad more detail added into the mystery that is Jeremy Irons' tower block, this Ben Wheatley feature looks great and looks to be an acting tour de force from Tom Hiddleson Not much to say other than I'm intrigued and somewhat excited - but then again it could be another Sightseers (a good but slow film).
The Purge: Election Year
The Purge franchise is an interesting specimen, as it changed from simple house invasion to street-based survival and now a political ploy based around a presidential candidate wanting to end the games. While I'm not big on the series nor the genre this is a smart move to take the series, and would make a good conclusion should the filmmakers be willing enough to keep it to a trilogy. Granted, the direction is a little shoddy and Frank Grillo being a bodyguard seems like an interesting decision, but I'm surprisingly optimistic here. Hardcore Henry
Motion sickness and basic plot aside, this looks bad-ass. Excellently edited together to Queen (much likeSuicide Squadlast month) and succeeding into getting the desired aesthetic, Hardcore Henry looks...well...hardcore.
Equals
Well...this looks a bit dull. Granted, it's just a teaser, but you want to be teased.
Why aren't I excited by this movie anymore? Is it the oversaturation of its marketing campaign, which started so long ago? That spoiler-filled trailer from December? Or that they're still pumping out new material a month before the film is released? I don't know, it just feels like too much for too little. I'm still planning to see it ASAP, but with little excitement than, say, 2013.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Meh. I'll give it a go, but I doubt there'll be much to it.
The Huntsman: Winter's War
So, Snow White and the Huntsman blended together with Tangled and Frozen? Right, going full-Disney then Universal. It looks okay, save for an odd music choice and a few aspects here and there, but nothing really exciting. Bit dull, if anything.
Criminal
Reminds me of last year's Self/Less. And that film was dull, from what I heard. So pass.
Mr Right
Hmm...VOD release starring two very charismatic actors? Sounds a bit...meh.
The Boss
Eh, nothing new here.
Mother's Day
Bleurgh...SKIP!
Sing
I broke my own rules and actually discussed it earlier on, which you can find here. But in short - Jesus Christ, this hurts.
Midnight Special
This film has a lot of buzz, and it's clear to see why. Young boy gets superpowers, turns fugitive with Michael Shannon to get away from authorities who'd experiment on him, events transpire...simple, but effective and very well shot. This looks really interesting.
Hmm, it certainly resembles the 2010 original. Freaky imagery, overly bright colours, and mad-cap performances (with an extra push for promotion with the late great Alan Rickman), it looks right - but then again, the first film only has a relative fanbase and following, so it may deter others.
Bastille Day
Idris Elba being a bad-ass and doing a Liam Neeson. Need I say more?
The Preppie Connection
Hey look, it's Me! I mean Greg! I mean Thomas Mann, in another small-scale indie film with good direction. This time though, the story is a lot less interesting, with an interesting look at peer pressure for the sake of getting the girl. A possible viewing. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie
Just what we needed: another British TV show movie! Eurgh...
Florence Foster Jenkins
Meryl Streep as a terrible singer who goes across the country doing concerts with Hugh Grant by her side? This sounds like a silly idea, but in actuality looks rather interesting and appealing! You can tell right from the get-go what's going to happen, but you can't deny that it captures interest.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny
Reviews for this are middling, so...
Pee-Wee's Big Holiday
Pee-Wee is something of a childhood classic for Americans, being a blend between the Muppets and Mr Bean, so it's natural that the icon would make a return via an online format. It looks harmless enough, but non-American audiences will likely look at it and wonder what the appeal is.
At long last, a look into the upcoming remake of Pete's Dragon...without the original look of the dragon nor its story. Okay Disney, this is quite the change of pace here. Granted, it still has that Disney magic feel to it and the Jungle Book-esque look to it is an interesting choice, and it is just a teaser. But the film just seems too different to the original, so who knows if it'll be any good?
