Trailer Talk: Beyond the Assassin's Accountant

Bad Moms
Okay, let's start this off with an easy one - a vulgar comedy about parents deciding to have fun rather than abide by the rules? Easy peasy dud. Standard character dynamics, cookie-cutter antagonist, unfunny dialogue... I'd only check it out if there was nothing else on.

No Stranger Than Love
I want to call this unique and quirky, but the trailer seems so oddly edited and has a rather mismatched narration that it just comes across as really weird. There's not much else really to say.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Eh, a standard introductory trailer for those somehow unfamiliar with the brand. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Shallows
Sharkbait! Hoo ha ha!

Ahem. Anywho, this shark attack flick looks alright. Nothing superb, and the trailer seems more inclined to reveal the character's relationships and life with a few unnecessary cuts (why is she bringing her nurse lanyard to the beach?), but it does suggest that some hearty sea-based horror may be had. I'd say wait for the reviews first in this case, though - it may end up being a mostly-dull production.

The Nice Guys
I'm seeing this on Thursday at a preview screening and I'm beyond excited for it. It looks funny, well directed, and the dynamic between Crowe and Gosling looks stellar.

Ice Age: Collision Course
Meh.

Inferno
...I've got nothing. I'm not a big follower of the Dan Brown trilogy so I can't really comment on these movies and their lore, but I do like Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones. Will it be good? Too early to really tell - unlike most Sony trailers they appear to be actually hiding something here.

Swiss Army Man
Another delve into this strange strange film, and it still brings about some questionable interest. Of course, it's great to see something so weird and unique, but with its mixed critical response on the festival circuit, it may be an intriguing viewing. Plus it kinda made me laugh.

Queen of Katwe
Every year we get one of these kinds of movies from Disney - the small-scale true stories that don't tend to make much of an impact culturally or financially. They come, go, and are forgotten quickly. A pity, considering the strong cast of Nyong'o and Oyelowo, but that's just how these things tend to work. Small-scale puff piece which will touch the heartstrings but not the box office.

The Woods
I thought everyone was really excited for this movie? Because this teaser just comes across as rather basic. I'm sure the reviews involved may be the reason why that is, and it's probable that there will indeed be scares. But I ain't seeing it here. Maybe trailer two will suffice.

Nerve
Well hello there, interesting movie. Taking on some form of social commentary about doing things for the sake of internet popularity is certainly a good idea in its own right, and with the 'slight' romantic angle involved does suggest some fun is to be had. But imagine if they had only hinted at there being a hidden angle to it all as opposed to delve into it by the end; what a surprise that would have turned out to be. Still intrigued, though!

Assassin's Creed
While I know I'm not alone in thinking that the music choice is poorly-suited to the elements presented here, I'm probably alone in thinking that it just looks alright. Nothing superb or unique, just a fine action film with some sci-fi elements and lovely backgrounds. The visuals just look far too murky, and Fassbender looks, dare I say it, bored by his role. I do hope the film fixes the bad video game movie curse, but at the moment it looks like it may just scrape past that barrier.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Based on the highly-praised book of the same name, and directed by visionary director Ang Lee, this film looks... like an awful lot of other war-based films, only with a Super Bowl angle involved. Hmm. Again, I'd wait until the critics get a hold of this before making a judgement on it.

The Accountant
Intriguing. Not only the way the trailer represents the footage on hand, but also the response the trailer itself has received since its online release. Both mostly focusing on Ben Affleck's fine performance as an unfeeling man who puts math before man. Like I said, intriguing.

Don't Breathe
Now THIS is an interesting horror movie. Opening with a basic premise and a cast of bland teenage characters, introducing a concept that suggests actual tension and fear factor does show some clear signs of newness to the generic murderer formula. And the final scenes within the darkness do look a bit weird, what with the female actress' wide eyes, it looks to be one of the scariest moments we'll see all year. For a non-horror movie man, I'm game.

The BFG
Released in time for its Cannes film festival premiere, The BFG continues to show promise through its Spielbergian visuals and strong ensemble cast. Reviews have been favourable, Mark Rylance remains utterly charming, and July can't come soon enough.

Ghostbusters
I feel really really bad for everyone involved in this film because it's kinda clear that they don't have a chance at winning. What with the online community constantly ripping into it and anyone who supports it (including poor Patton Oswalt, who's recent loss has been used against him by the haters to a startling degree of disgust) and with both trailers being released to an onslaught of dislikes (this second trailer hasn't even been released on the official Sony Pictures channel), some would feel inclined to be supportive. And I kinda am; even if the material present isn't making me laugh, or that some of the characters are written or performed a little blandly, I still want this film to prove me and everyone else wrong. Please be good - not just for your own sake but for everyone else's too.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
I think the best thing to come out of this film will be the music. Comedy will work for some, probably not for me, but as long as the tunes strive all will be fine.

Sausage Party
Yep, still not digging this. Animation looks off, not my cup of tea comedy-wise, and it's just... boring. I understand the hype, but it's not cooking up a storm for me.

Star Trek Beyond
You see this? This is much better than that other trailer. While obvious clip recycling from Star Trek (2009) is obvious, this looks more like Star Trek than Star Trek has done for a little while, and the additions of both Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella look to both be strong inclusions. Looking much better, guys. Much better.
