Trailer Talk: Gods of the Bronze Zootopia - Civil War
Gods of Egypt
I know the director has since apologised for the whitewashing of Egyptian characters, but can he also apologise for the poor special effects, seemingly generic story and the casting of Brenton Thwaites? Because only then would I consider seeing this film which seems so franchise-hungry that it looks bad?
Zoolander 2
The only thing I can comment on here is that Benedict Cumberbatch looks absolutely terrifying. I know his role has caused controversy because of the transgender joke, and I have to admit that it isn't funny in the slightest, but it is an image which has been ingrained in my head since the trailer was released.
How to be Single
For a comedy which appears to be somewhat based around multiple characters, why are stuck with a dull emotionless Dakota Johnson and an overrated Rebel Wilson? Especially when you have cult favourite Alison Brie and occasionally-funny Leslie Mann amongst its primary cast? How to be Single doesn't appear to be overly funny, with only a comment revolving around Tom Hanks in Cast Away getting anything close to a smirk.
The Huntsman: Winter's War
What to do when you want to build a franchise but have the tiny issue of having your lead actress cheat on their boyfriend with the director? Well, make a prequel based on a side character, of course! And despite the fact that Chris Hemsworth hasn't had much success financially outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Universal seems to be faithful in the Australian actor and give him his own movie against Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain - both not being big box office draws but having their own fans. It does look like an improvement on Snow White and the Huntsman...but barely.
Now You See Me 2
The Four Horsemen are back (sans Isla Fisher, replaced with Lizzy Caplan) in this minute-long teaser and it looks...alright. I haven't seen the first film, but its trailers did look good, and of course the tricks look extravagant (plus this instalment has Daniel Radcliffe, so score!), but I'm cautious about it.
A Monster Calls
Based on the book of the same title, this small teaser offers both intrigue and some shots of pure beauty. Not much else to add really.
On one hand, I'm happy to see Melissa McCarthey FINALLY have a different role for the first time since Bridesmaids, but on the other hand it's still an unfunny comedy with very little new to it. A likely skip.
A simple premise for this trailer, but executed perfectly thanks to the animation quality and voice actors. Plus the slow change of face to show laughter? Perfect.
At long last, we get a look at Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and of course I'm already excited for it. Thankfully this first look is more dialogue-heavy and focusing on the cause of said war than the action or the new characters (save for a few glimpses of Black Panther, who does look better in photos than in the teaser), but you get your fill of Marvel stuff. Bring it on.
Ride Along 2
SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP! I Saw the Light
This film does have plenty to go for it. A really good American accent by Tom Hiddleston, plus a story which does look alright...but the festival circuit is saying otherwise, which saddens me. I'll check it out, certainly, but the quality is up in the air.
SK-Wait, a comedy trailer which I actually liked and laughed with? Starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as two detective-esque characters? How did I enjoy this? And why do I have the urge to see this film?!
